The Problem:

1 in 3 women will face gender biased discrimination throughout their lives, and this risk is much higher during travel. It can be difficult to navigate the different legislature, norms and cultural barriers we encounter during travel. This is especially true for female travelers, who might be treated inconsistently when crossing international borders due to gender inequalities in various political, economic and religious institutions.

Furthermore, when female travelers try to research their destinations to plan safe and well informed vacations, the lack of transparent information is clear.

The Solution: 

I conducted a 10 week long research project to determine the biggest factors of global gender inequality, as well as why it can be so difficult for women to find transparent information on this matter. Throughout the project, I found that there was a need for an accessible bank of information regarding female travel that had no economic obligation to the country and was centered around female experiences. 

 

I came up with Wandher an app that has three primary purposes:

1. To provide information on international current events and the gender inequality index of destinations. (both of which will affect travel experiences) 

2. A social network where women can share travel experiences, recommendations, and insight on a global scale. 

3. The space to research vacation itineraries and accommodations without any sneaky financial motives.

To ensure the app is secure, users will have to verify their identity when they set up their profile. Wandher will also recruit ambassadors across different countries to make sure there is a basis of local knowledge on the platform. Finally, the app will work to gather emergency information (such as contact methods for local law enforcement and governing bodies) through these ambassadors and through research.
